The town was elevated to colonial rank between 46 and 45 BC as the tenth region of the Roman Republic, under Julius Caesar.
With the collapse of the Venetian Republic in 1797 following Napoleon's Treaty of Campo Formio, Pula became part of the Habsburg monarchy.
