He is the co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach for Kent State University, positions he has held since 2024.
Patterson served as the head football coach at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College from 2016 to 2017.
He had stints at Tarleton State, Texas A&M Kingsville and Trinity Valley Community College before being hired as the head coach at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M.

[3][4] Following an 0–5 start to the 2022 season, Colorado fired head coach Karl Dorell and named offensive coordinator Mike Sanford Jr. the interim head coach, and Sanford promoted Patterson to the open offensive coordinator position.
