Royal College of Surgeons

[2] The Guild of Barbers of Dublin received a Royal Charter of Henry VI in 1446, making it the earliest Royal Medical incorporation in Great Britain or Ireland.

This body was granted a royal charter in 1506 by King James IV of Scotland.

The union in London was formalised further in 1540 by King Henry VIII of England between the Worshipful Company of Barbers (incorporated 1462) and the Guild of Surgeons to form the Company of Barber-Surgeons.

A further charter in 1843 granted it the present title of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

In 2010 Professor Eilis McGovern became president of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and thereby the first female president of any Royal College of Surgeons in the world.
