Established in 1882, it is one of Melbourne's oldest inner city schools.

As of 2022, it shares a senior campus named, Wurun Senior Campus for VCE students with Fitzroy High School.

In 1915, Collingwood Domestic Arts School was established.

A history of Collingwood College entitled The School on the Flat: Collingwood College 1882–2007 was published to mark the 125th anniversary of the school's opening.
