Columbus State Hospital

[3][4] The Lunatic Asylum of Ohio was initially organized by an act of the General Assembly passed on March 5, 1835.

[5] The original hospital building, after three years of construction, was completed in 1838 at a cost of about $61,000.

[5] In November 1868, a fire destroyed the asylum, killing six patients and displacing over 300 others.

[1] The hospital was closed in the late 1980s, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in an attempt to save the building in 1986.
