Counties of Denmark

Greenland and the Faroe Islands are also part of the Danish Realm, but both enjoy internal autonomy.

Greenland changed from a colony to an overseas county in 1953, and subsequently gained home rule in 1979.

Only the United Kingdom and Ireland had more populous entities at the lowest political administrative level.

The reform was confirmed by the Danish Parliament on 24 February 2005 and the counties were abolished on 1 January 2007.

The archipelago Ertholmene, located northeast of Bornholm, have never been a part of a municipality, county, or (from 2007) region.
