He won in the general election defeating the incumbent Michael Griffin and assumed office on November 9, 2022.

Dernulc is a graduate of Purdue University Northwest and holds a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering technology.

[2] Prior to Dernulc's election to the senate, he was a Lake County Councilman.

[3] He serves on the Senate Committees on Education and Career Development; Environmental Affairs; Local Government; and Pensions and Labor.

[2] Dernulc and his wife, Cindy, live in Highland where they raised four children and now have three grandchildren.
