Born in New York in September 1839, Daniel Macauley (sometimes misspelled as McCauley) immigrated to Indianapolis, Indiana sometime prior to 1861.
During the summer of 1862, the regiment participated in operations in Arkansas and Mississippi, during which time Macauley was promoted to lieutenant colonel on 4 September 1862.
[2]: 84 While commanding the 3rd Brigade, 2nd Division of the XIX Army Corps, Colonel Macauley fell grievously wounded during the battle of Cedar Creek in October 1864.
The severity of his wounds precluded field service, so Macauley was detailed as the Colonel of the 9th Regiment of the Veteran’s Reserve Corps, then garrisoning Baltimore.
On 11 July 1865, Macauley was awarded a brevet for Brigadier General backdated to 19 October 1864, the date of his wounding at Cedar Creek.
