[2][1] Built in approximately 1851, it is a rather large Greek Revival house built by New York native and merchant David Carpenter, who was one of Lenawee County's most prominent residents when he moved to the area in 1838.
Several walls were removed at later dates to create larger rooms.
It remained a private residence until 1960 when it was converted into the Hathaway House restaurant by the Weeber family.
Today, the structure includes three dining rooms and two parlors on the main floor and three dining rooms and a ballroom on the second floor.
[3] The structure has retained most of its exterior details since it was first constructed.
