He began his career as a teacher at Ilford County High School between 1972 and 1974, from which post he resigned when he was elected to Redbridge London Borough Council (1974–78).

Following the 1992 general election he was appointed the Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) to the Minister of State at the Department for Education, Emily Blatch.

He contested the newly drawn Bexleyheath and Crayford seat in 1997, but lost to Labour's Nigel Beard by 3,415 votes.
