De Hoop, Readtsjerk

De Hoop (English: The Hope) is a smock mill in Readtsjerk, Friesland, Netherlands which was built in 1911.

De Hoop was originally built in 1863 at Scharmer, Groningen.

[1] In 1961, the mill was mechanised, with a new steel Archimedes' screw replacing the former wooden one.

[1] De Hoop was sold to Stichting De Fryske Mole on 17 May 1972, the 3rd mill acquired by that organisation[2] The mill is used to train people in the art of working windmills.

The lower crown wheel, which has 38 cogs is carried on the axle of an Archimedes' screw, which is used to drain the polder.

Each revolution of the screw lifts 844 litres (186 imp gal) of water.
