It had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on 13 July 2021.

In March 2016, Arnaud Desplechin expressed desire to adapt Deception by Philip Roth, stating: "Perhaps it’s a book that I will never be able to adapt for the screen, and I know I will regret it for the rest of my days.

"[2] In December 2020, it was announced Léa Seydoux, Denis Podalydès, Emmanuelle Devos and Gennadi Famin had joined the cast of the film, with Desplechin directing from a screenplay he wrote alongside Julie Peyr.
