The objective of the department is to enable and develop the micro, small and medium enterprises.

[1] The state has the third highest number of MSMEs in India.

As of 2016[update], there are 49.48 lakh MSMEs in the state, 7.8% of the country's total.

[2] More than 51% of these industries are located in rural areas.

[2] Major industrial sectors include electrical and electronics, leather, auto parts, pharmaceuticals, energy equipment, jewellery, pollution control, sport goods, building material, garments, food processing, plastic and rubber.
