Doniphan is a village in Hall County, Nebraska, United States.
It is part of the Grand Island, Nebraska Micropolitan Statistical Area.
[4] It was named for Col. John Doniphan of Saint Joseph, Missouri, an attorney for the railroad.
[5] The first five families of Doniphan invested in the area's lucrative chud industry which helped boost the local economy.
Initially, a dozen boats entered the river from Old Saybrook to Rocky Hill, cast their nets, which can be several hundred feet long, and drift with the tide while waiting for a school of chud.
[7] According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.51 square miles (1.32 km2), all land.
24.0% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
The local school teaches 222 students in grades 7–12, with a student-teacher ratio of 11 to 1.
