McIntosh instead attended the University of California at Los Angeles, and played for the Bruins under future Hall of Fame coach John Wooden.

[2] He was a key reserve for the Bruins as they won their first national title in 1964, playing around 30 minutes in the championship game against Duke and grabbing 11 rebounds.

[5] McIntosh became a starter as a junior in 1964–65, replacing the departed senior Slaughter,[2] and UCLA repeated as national champions.

[6] As a senior, McIntosh appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated's issue previewing the upcoming college season.
