He was an Anglo-Indian who played a significant role in the British campaigns of Afghanistan, Mysore and Central India and bequeathed 50,000 pounds for the purpose of education which led to the formation of the Doveton Corrie Schools and Doveton College in Calcutta (now Kolkata).
