Down Easter (ship)

The Down Easter or Downeaster was a type of 19th-century sailing ship built in Maine, and used largely in the California grain trade.

It could make the trip between San Francisco and Liverpool in 100 days, despite rounding Cape Horn and crossing the equator twice.

The Rappahannock was a full-rigged 3-masted ship, and the Sewalls realized that at this size a fourth mast was needed to make the rig manageable.

[citation needed] "Down Easter" may also refer to a type of power fishing vessels[3] or a brand of sailboats.

[4] Billy Joel composed a song called "The Downeaster Alexa",[5] describing the ship as a power fishing vessel.
