During the Irish War of Independence, he took part in a number of operations and attacks on British forces.

During the Truce period, Corbett was appointed Divisional Vice Commandant of 1 Western Division, IRA.

[3] He was elected to Dáil Éireann as a Fianna Fáil Teachta Dála (TD) for the Galway constituency at a 1935 by-election caused by the death of Martin McDonogh of Fine Gael.
