Lynskey's work has been favorably compared to that of Loren D. Estleman, James Lee Burke, Daniel Woodrell, Bill Pronzini, and Robert Crais.

He won the 1993 Denny C. Plattner Appalachian Heritage Award in Poetry from Berea College, Kentucky.
