In the 1950s, he was a member of the first national team of the People's Republic of China, and was named one of the ten most popular football players in the country.
He served as the sixth head coach of the China national team in 1964, and later as head coach of the Shanghai football team which won the gold medal in the 1983 National Games of China.

[2] In 1957, Fang was a member of the China national team that played in the 1958 FIFA World Cup qualification rounds.
The team failed to qualify after narrowly losing to Indonesia,[1] but Fang was named as one of the ten most popular football players of China.
