It was founded on March 16, 1959, as the Federação Desportiva de Brasília (FDB) and has undergone several name changes over the years:[2] The FFDF is responsible for organizing all official football tournaments within the Federal District, including the Campeonato Brasiliense, its lower divisions, and the Campeonato Brasiliense de Futebol Feminino.
It also represents local clubs in the Confederação Brasileira de Futebol (CBF).

The competition features ten teams: The 2025 edition commenced on January 18, 2025, and follows a single round-robin format, with semifinals and a final match scheduled for March 29, 2025.
