[4] Leung was awarded the Hans Freudenthal medal by the International Commission for Mathematical Instruction in 2013, and was conferred the Bronze Bauhinia Star (BBS)[5][6] by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in 2017.

He was appointed a Senior Fulbright Scholar in 2003,[7][8] a Changjiang Scholar by the Ministry of Education of China in 2014,[9] and he received the World Outstanding Chinese award[10] by the World Chinese Business Investment Foundation in 2015.

He was a member of the Standing Committee of International Association for the Evaluation of Academic Achievement (IEA) from 2007-2010, then a Honorary member of the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA).

At the University of Hong Kong, he was recognized as a Distinguished Alumnus of the Faculty of Science in 2019.

[12] Leung’s research area is in comparative studies in mathematics education, including student achievement and classroom practices, with a specific focus on the influence of culture on different aspects of mathematics education.
