Gębice, Krosno Odrzańskie County

Gębice [ɡɛmˈbit͡sɛ] is a village in the administrative district of Gmina Gubin, within Krosno Odrzańskie County, Lubusz Voivodeship, in western Poland, close to the German border.

[1] It lies approximately 12 kilometres (7 mi) south-east of Gubin, 27 km (17 mi) south-west of Krosno Odrzańskie, and 48 km (30 mi) west of Zielona Góra.

During World War II, in 1939, Nazi Germany established and operated a temporary prisoner-of-war camp for Poles in the village.

[2] Also Polish civilians and clergy were held in the camp, including Maximilian Kolbe, Franciscan friar and saint of the Catholic Church,[2] later killed in the Auschwitz concentration camp.
