George D. Ruggles

George David Ruggles (September 11, 1833 – October 19, 1904) was an American military officer who was Adjutant General of the United States Army from 1893 to 1897.

His parents died when he was young, and he was raised by his uncle, Charles H. Ruggles, who was Chief Justice of the New York Court of Appeals.

He graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1855 and was appointed to the 2nd Infantry, in which he served until the outbreak of the American Civil War.

He later served as assistant chief-of-staff of the Army of the Potomac, being engaged in the battles of South Mountain and Antietam.

In April 1898, he was appointed governor of the Soldiers' Home in Washington, D.C., where he served until January 1903.
