Gerkesklooster (West Frisian: Gerkeskleaster) is a village in Achtkarspelen in the province of Friesland, the Netherlands.
[3] The village was first mentioned in 1240 as "in Wigarathorpe1", and in 1393, it was called Gherkescloester, meaning "monastery of Gerke".
In 1240, Gerke Harkema founded monastery Jeruzalem in the village.
[5] After a sluice was built in the canal from Dokkum to Groningen, a second settlement developed called Stroobos.
There is an American wind mill from 1923 near the village which serves as a pumping station to remove excess water from the polder.
