It was once a stop on the Wisconsin Central Railway, but the line to Glenwood City is now abandoned.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.49 square miles (6.45 km2), all of it land.

Glenwood City is home to the St. Croix County Fair in July.
