The gmina covers an area of 231.57 square kilometres (89.4 sq mi), and as of 2006 its total population is 7,192 (7,309 in 2013).

According to the legend, Prince Janusz III Mazowiecki ordered the building of a hunting lodge on the spot, which he named Jednorożec (unicorn).
