Governor Stephen Hopkins House

It was the home of Stephen Hopkins, a governor of the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations and a signer of the Declaration of Independence.

This entry is a 20th-century alteration; the original main entrance was through a doorway on the west side of the ell.

[4] Stephen Hopkins purchased the original house in 1742 and enlarged it to its present size.

[4] George Washington visited the house on April 5, 1776 while traveling through Providence on his way to take command of the Continental Army in Boston.

[6] It is now owned by The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America and managed by their local state chapter, as is standard for most NSCDA properties.
