Gregory S. Newbold

Openly critical of Donald Rumsfeld's plans for the invasion of Iraq,[2] he retired partly as a protest.

[3] After his commissioning as a second lieutenant in 1970 he attended The Basic School at the Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia, where he was designated an infantry officer.

While Lieutenant General Newbold commanded the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit, this force was in the vanguard of the U.S. commitment for Operation Restore Hope in Somalia.

Prior to reporting to his assignment with the Joint Staff, he served as Commanding General, 1st Marine Division.
