It is the church for the Greipstad parish which is part of the Kristiansand domprosti (arch-deanery) in the Diocese of Agder og Telemark.
The white, wooden church was built in a rectangular design in 1829 using plans drawn up by the architect Arild Sibbern.
The old stave church was torn down and replaced with a new building around the year 1550.
The new church was designed by Arild Sibbern and construction was completed in 1828.
The new building was consecrated on 8 February 1829 by the priest Fabritius.
