It is best known for its professional football team, that competes in the Egyptian Premier League.
Haras El Hodood was founded in 1932 under the name of El-Sawahel Social Sporting Club, before being renamed to its current name on 16 July 1974.
They were in the first place after 14 matches in the 2011–12 Egyptian Premier League, before the season was cancelled due to the Port Said Stadium disaster.
