Newlands was called to the Nova Scotia Bar in 1883, after which he would go on to have an important role in the domain of law.
He also served as inspector of land titles offices in the Northwest Territories as well as law adviser to the Yukon Executive Council.
On February 5, 1904, he was named a Justice of the Supreme Court of the Northwest Territories, and continued to hold on to the job following the creation of the province of Saskatchewan in 1905.
