It is the church for the Hornindal parish which is part of the Søre Sunnmøre prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Møre.
It was replaced by a low, wooden long church at the nearby Kirkhorn farm.
The builder was first Anders Muldsvor, but he died before the work was finished, and was replaced by Gjert Lien.
The church was consecrated on 30 November 1856 by the priest Wilhelm Frimann Koren.
[4][5][6] Prior to 1 January 2020, the church was part of the Nordfjord prosti in the Diocese of Bjørgvin.
