Hummer has played professionally in countries such as Germany, Finland, Turkey, Russia, France (Monaco), Greece and Japan.
Hummer played for Gonzaga College High School of the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC).

Ed helped Bill Bradley take the 1964–65 Princeton Tigers to the semifinals of the 1965 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament.
His uncle, John Hummer, was a member of Princeton's class of 1970 and played six seasons in the National Basketball Association.
