[1] The son of Reverend Canon Ernest E. Rusted and Faith Hollands Rusted, he was born in Upper Island Cove, Newfoundland and attended school in Carbonear and St. John's.
He interned at Victoria General Hospital in Halifax and went on to earn a BSc from McGill University in 1949.
From 1952 to 1967, he served as medical consultant to the Newfoundland Department of Health.
He was director of Medical Education, director of the Memorial University Research Unit and chairman of the Department of Medicine at St. John's General Hospital, also practising privately.
He stepped down as dean in 1974, when he was named vice-president of Health Sciences.
