József attended the Piarists’ grammar school, and then studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna while working as court architect for the Esterhazy family.

In 1839 he was placed in charge of the construction of the Primatial Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St Adalbert in Esztergom.
After his wife's death, he lived alone and died almost forgotten[6] Hild's classicist style contributed greatly to the transformation of Pest in the early 19th century.
