It is the church for the Jøssund parish, which is part of the Fosen prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Nidaros.
In the 19th century the church was considered too small for the number of people attending it.
After a long dispute over its location, the church site was moved to Mandal, about 2.25 kilometres (1.40 mi) to the northeast of the old church site.
The new church was built there in 1875 and it was consecrated on 27 April 1876 by Bishop Andreas Grimelund.
Nes Church was remodeled in 1950 by the architect John Egil Tverdahl and was re-consecrated on 29 May 1953 by Bishop Arne Fjellbu.
