The college was founded by M. Jamal Mohamed Sahib and N.M. Khajamian Rowther.
In 1977, the University of Madras recommended it as one of ten "Lead colleges" within its jurisdiction.
[citation needed] The college received accreditation from the NAAC in 2002 and was granted autonomous status by UGC, New Delhi and Bharathidasan University in 2004–2005.
[citation needed] Over seven decades, the college has grown into a multi-faculty institution, offering 23 undergraduate and 20 postgraduate programs.
Nineteen departments function as approved research centres, with an enrollment of approximately 12,000 students.
The teaching faculty includes 145 government-aided staff and 354 in the self-finance stream.
