On June 30, 2013, during the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, McBain was traded to the Buffalo Sabres, along with Carolina's second-round pick, in exchange for defenseman Andrej Sekera.

On October 31, 2014, McBain belatedly began the 2014–15 season by agreeing to a professional try-out contract with the Manchester Monarchs of the American Hockey League (AHL).
