Growing up in a suburb of Toronto, Ontario, Firestone was the third child of six born to Jewish parents Esther, the first female cantor in Canada, and Paul.

Stuck, a horror film released in 2007, starring Mena Suvari and Stephen Rea, tells the true story of a man hit by a car and left for dead in the driver's garage.

Firestone was a producer on the TV show Dark Matter, which is based on a comic book series created by writers Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie.
