Sir John Evans KCB FRS FSA FRAI (17 November 1823 – 31 May 1908) was an English antiquarian, geologist and founder of prehistoric archaeology.

The John Evans collection, housed at Oxford's Ashmolean Museum, comprises more than 12,000 objects, including a large proportion of British Palaeolithic stone tools.

At the age of seventeen he started to work for the paper-manufacturing business of John Dickinson & Co. Ltd at Nash Mills (Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire).

His academic honors included honorary degrees from several universities and he was a corresponding member of the Institut de France.

Her partly autobiographical book Time and Chance: The Story of Arthur Evans and His Forebears (1943) is an important source on her father.
