Hughes was a right-handed batsman who bowled right-arm medium pace.
Hughes made his first-class cricket debut for Northamptonshire against Surrey in the 1990 County Championship.
[4] He made his List A debut against Nottinghamshire in the 1990 Refuge Assurance League.
He made his debut for the county in the MCCA Knockout Trophy against the Surrey Cricket Board.
[8] He made his first List A appearance for Bedfordshire in the 1998 NatWest Trophy against Glamorgan, and between 1998 and 2001 he made nine further List A appearances for the county, the last of which came against Devon in the 2nd round of the 2002 Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy, which was played in 2001 to avoid fixture congestion the following season.
