He is the author of Yesterday’s Deterrent: Tirpitz and the Birth of the German Battle Fleet' (1965)', Why Switzerland?
His biography of Otto Von Bismarck entitled Bismarck: A Life was published by Oxford University Press in 2011 and was short-listed for the BBC Samuel Johnson Prize for Non-Fiction in 2011 and short-listed for the Duff Cooper Prize in 2012.
