It is headed by an IPS officer in the rank of ADG as its Commissioner of Police.

Kanpur zone is headed by an IPS officer in the rank of Additional director general of police (ADG), whereas Kanpur range is headed by an IPS officer in the rank of Inspector General of Police (IG).

On 26 March 2021, Government of Uttar Pradesh decided to make commissionerate in Kanpur Nagar city headed by rank of Additional Director of Police (ADG).
