Kawakami (川上村, Kawakami-mura) is a village located in Nagano Prefecture, Japan.

The total area of the village is 209.61 square kilometres (80.93 sq mi).

The village office is located at an altitude of 1,185 meters,[2] the highest of any municipality in Japan.

[5] Per Japanese census data,[7] while remaining relatively stable historically, in recent years, the population of Kawakami has been declining.

The present village of Kawakami was created with the establishment of the modern municipalities system on April 1, 1889.
