She finished second behind defending world champion Anja Huber of Germany in the season opener at Winterberg on 28 November 2008.

After retiring from the sport Szymkowiak was appointed an Athlete Role Model for the 2012 Winter Youth Olympics in Innsbruck.

[2] Szymkowiak's husband Philippe is a massage therapist for the Swiss national bobsleigh team.
