The station was opened on 30 October 1855 by the Dublin, Wicklow and Wexford Railway as Kilcool.
The nearest bus stop is at Beechdale, located 900m from the station which is served by Dublin Bus routes 84/84a (Newcastle to Blackrock, via Bray Station) and 84X (Newcastle to Dublin, via UCD).

The station has one through platform and is unstaffed, has no ticket machine or toilet and is not wheelchair accessible.
The station is one of the least served on the whole Irish Rail network,[citation needed] with only a handful of trains per day.
