Kildare was a parliamentary constituency represented in Dáil Éireann, the lower house of the Irish parliament or Oireachtas from 1923 to 1937 and from 1948 to 1997.
The method of election was proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote (PR-STV).
From 1923 to 1937 Kildare elected 3 deputies (Teachtaí Dála, commonly known as TDs),[1] until it was absorbed into a new Carlow–Kildare constituency in 1937.
Following the death of Fine Gael TD Gerard Sweetman, a by-election was held on 14 April 1970.
Following the death of Labour Party TD Hugh Colohan, a by-election was held on 29 June 1931.
