[1] Kottayam is one of the seven dioceses created after the Mulanthuruthi Christian association (synod) conducted under the leadership of Ignatius Peter IV, Patriarch of Antioch in 1876.

Kuriakos Mar Gregorios (Pampadi Thirumeni) led the diocese in the period of 1929–1965.

In 1987, head office shifted to Kuriakos Mar Gregorios Centre.
