In June 2012, Fife Council proposed that the neighbouring Kirkland and Buckhaven schools should close and their catchments would merge to create Levenmouth Academy.
The school was opened officially on 10 March 2017 by then Deputy First Minister of Scotland John Swinney.
The proposals were prompted by the age of the respective buildings and facilities, and the grant for a new school from the Scottish Government.
Local councillor John O'Brien voiced his concern for the area, and said that the school should 'educate their pupils about disposing of their litter properly'.
The headteacher, Ronnie Ross, released a statement, which said that they were '[working] closely with pupils to ensure they understand their role as responsible citizens and the importance of safeguarding and caring for [their] local environment'.
